The adidas Stan Smith has been a cultural icon since its introduction in 1978, transcending the boundaries of the tennis court to become a fashion staple. Now the legendary sneaker takes on a new form as the adidas VeloStan Smith, designed specifically for urban cyclists and commuters who demand both style and functionality.
The VeloStan Smith retains the distinctive silhouette of the original Stan Smith while incorporating cycling-specific modifications. The most notable addition is the two-bolt SPD cleat system that is seamlessly integrated into the midsole, allowing cyclists to effortlessly switch between clipless pedaling and walking. This discreet cleat mount allows the shoe to maintain its classic aesthetic while providing the performance needed for avid cyclists and commuters.
To enhance the riding experience, adidas has embedded a rigid nylon plate into the synthetic sole that covers the front two-thirds of the shoe. This innovative design provides the stiffness needed for efficient pedaling while maintaining flexibility and comfort when walking. The result is a versatile shoe that effortlessly transitions from the bike to the street.
The upper of the VeloStan Smith is made of soft, full grain leather for all-season durability. The iconic green foam heel and three perforated stripes pay homage to the original silhouette while maintaining the shoe’s timeless appeal. As a special touch, the tongue features a gold portrait of Stan Smith and his road bike, a unique embellishment found only on the VeloStan Smith.
Kerryn Foster, Head of Specialist Sports at adidas, expressed the importance of this collaboration: “It’s been very special to collaborate with Stan on this project alongside our Originals team. For over five decades, the Stan Smith has reimagined what a sport shoe can be, becoming as much of an icon in fashion and wider culture, as it was originally on the court. We know that cyclists need flexibility when in urban environments, so this latest cycling-specific iteration was designed with this front of mind – a unique shoe crafted to help riders discover their local landscape in stand-out style.”
American tennis player Stan Smith himself shared his excitement about the VeloStan Smith: “The Stan Smith sneaker journey started in 1978, and it has been a joy to watch adidas evolve and reimagine it ever since, with this latest version imagined especially for cyclists – being no different. As someone who loves the adventure cycling offers – it’s exciting to see how these small but mighty additions can continue the silhouette’s sporting legacy. By bringing Stan Smith to cycling, I hope it encourages more people to discover new communities and find freedom through the bicycle.”
The adidas VeloStan Smith joins the VeloSamba as part of adidas’ growing city cycling collection, offering everyday footwear options for those who explore their surroundings by bike and beyond. The shoe is available now for €140 in a classic white and green colorway at select retail stores and at adidas.com/cycling.
