Maria Grazia Chiuri’s vision for Christian Dior‘s Fall/Winter 2024 Haute Couture collection takes a refreshing turn, defying expectations and redefining luxury for the modern woman. This season, Chiuri isn’t interested in constricting the body with corsets, but rather “releasing” it, as she herself declared. This philosophy perfectly encapsulates Chiuri’s role as a modern couturier, one who prioritizes comfort and movement alongside elegance.

Inspired by the upcoming Paris Olympics and the coinciding centenary of the 1924 Games, Chiuri draws a parallel between the fight for female athletic recognition and the evolution of sportswear throughout history. Her collection celebrates the liberation women gained through adopting practical clothing for movement, a stark contrast to the restrictive corsets of the past. Chiuri cleverly references the peplos, an ancient Greek garment, reimagining it in luxurious fabrics like silk jersey and metal jersey. These draped creations are a far cry from the corseted gowns traditionally associated with couture.

Chiuri doesn’t shy away from modern elements either. Her use of tank tops and bodysuits as underpinnings for flowing gowns exemplifies the fusion of comfort and couture. The collection boasts an array of pantsuits in luxurious fabrics like white moiré and black velvet, some featuring a peplos detail for a touch of Grecian flair. Eveningwear shines with asymmetrical gold lamé dresses and sheer crystal-embellished tank tops paired with flowing skirts.

While some might miss the extravagant gowns and embellishments typically associated with couture, Chiuri’s focus on luxurious fabrics like crushed velvet and lamé ensures a level of opulence without sacrificing comfort or movement. The collection pays homage not just to Christian Dior’s heritage, but also to the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with couture ateliers.
