The rockstar designer gives the sneaker a ’90s-inspired makeover in two classic colorways – black and “Natural Ivory”.
The result is a shoe that looks new and different, but one that isn’t unrecognizable, with its base design still very much part of the aesthetic.
Jones describes the new collection as “a modern version of the ‘Take Ivy’ vibe”, he said. “I looked at the Japanese designers readapting American sportswear – recreating that ’50s and ’60s look. Obviously, Converse was the key shoe within all that stuff. Now I’m just putting it all together in a different way”.
His rendition on the Chuck 70 takes great care to keep what works. The silhouette is unchanged. The fabric is the usual hardy cotton canvas. The Chuck Taylor DNA has remained intact. That’s all in keeping with the way he thinks of himself: as an “evolutionary designer, not a revolutionary designer”. But what Jones has changed isn’t so subtle. The Chuck 70 has been updated with a transparent TPU cage and an outsole reengineered with a diamond grip. The lacing system is also integrated into a translucent TPU panel, grafted on top of the shoe, like a protective case. In addition, Jones’ name is branded on the sneaker’s tongue and sockliner.
As for the clothing capsule, Jones combines notions of classic Americana, streetwear, and sportswear before mashing together under a contemporary lens. The result includes T-shirts, jackets, crewnecks, and a standout pair of popper button-equipped cargo pants.
