The position of Artistic director at Lanvin has been filled by renowned British designer Peter Copping, who brings extensive experience from Sonia Rykiel, Louis Vuitton, Oscar de la Renta, Nina Ricci and, most recently, Balenciaga. Copping, who succeeds Bruno Sialelli, will start in September 2024 and will immediately begin work on Lanvin’s Pre-Fall 2025 collections, with the timing of his runway debut yet to be determined.
At Balenciaga since 2022, Copping has served as head of special projects and VIP atelier, leading the ateliers for the reintroduction of the couture collection. This expertise in couture and technical rigor aligns perfectly with Lanvin’s mission to reposition the brand in contemporary culture with “radical chic and French sophistication“.
Copping’s appointment marks an important milestone in the ongoing renaissance of the iconic French fashion house over the past two years. Siddhartha Shukla, Lanvin’s Deputy CEO, expressed confidence that “with Peter’s vision and technical rigor and the continued perseverance of our teams globally, we will identify a new frontier in fashion and deliver beauty and results in equal measure.”
A graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, Copping brings an impressive pedigree and breadth of experience to his new role. He said he was ”extremely honored” to be selected and eager to ”write the next chapter for this iconic house” with the atelier and teams. Copping noted that Lanvin founder Jeanne Lanvin “was a visionary of her time whose interests and passions extended far beyond fashion,” which resonates with his own multi-faceted pursuits.
Interestingly, Copping is the second designer, after Jules-François Crahay in the 1950s-70s, to have worked at both Nina Ricci and Lanvin during his career. In addition, Oscar de la Renta, where Copping previously served as Creative director, was himself a couture assistant at Lanvin in the 1950s under Antonio Castillo. These historical threads add depth to Copping’s story as he takes the creative reins at Lanvin.
Copping’s appointment builds on the momentum of Lanvin‘s comprehensive reset over the past four years under Shukla’s leadership, including new product strategies, dedicated leather goods and accessories teams, and the experimental Lanvin Lab.
